Sightseeing
Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba
On the northwestern shore of Lake Saiko, in a fan-shaped area facing Mt. Fuji, there once stood a village known as “the most beautiful village in Japan.” The Nenba settlement, believed to date back to the Takeda clan era, originally consisted of around 40 traditional thatched-roof houses known as “Kabuto-zukuri,” built closely side by side with their roofs nearly touching each other. However, the village was destroyed by a devastating typhoon and landslide disaster.
Forty years later, in 2006, “Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba” was established to recreate the beautiful lost village scenery while preserving the area’s history, culture, and unique natural surroundings as a new cultural and tourism destination. Today, the site features 20 reconstructed thatched-roof houses, faithfully restoring the traditional Kabuto-zukuri architecture using reclaimed materials, along with recreated charcoal huts and silkworm houses once used for sericulture.

Saiko Bat Cave
A natural lava cave filled with a sense of adventure. Around the foothills of Mt. Fuji, there are many caves formed by volcanic lava, and the Saiko Bat Cave is the largest among them, stretching approximately 350 meters in length. Due to its relatively warm temperature, the cave has long been home to many bats and has become one of the most popular attractions around Lake Saiko.

Fugaku Wind Cave
Fugaku Wind Cave is a natural lava cave surrounded by the lush forests of the Aokigahara Forest. Even during summer, the cave remains pleasantly cool with an average temperature of around 3°C (37°F). Until the early Showa era, it was used as a natural refrigerator for storing silkworm eggs. The cave is also designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan.
The cave stretches approximately 201 meters in length and reaches a height of 8.7 meters. Interestingly, the basalt walls absorb sound, creating almost no echo inside the cave. The 15-minute walking course features fascinating sights such as ice pillars that never melt even in summer, lava shelves, and rope-shaped lava formations.

Narusawa Ice Cave
Located at the eastern entrance of the Aokigahara Forest, this natural cave is one of the most popular year-round attractions in the Fuji Five Lakes area. Narusawa Ice Cave was formed in 864 AD during the eruption of Mt. Nagao, a side volcano of Mt. Fuji, when lava flowed through gaps between older volcanic formations, creating a tunnel-shaped cave.
In 1929, the cave was designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan and became widely recognized for its significant geological value. Even during summer, ice remains inside the cave, giving it a mysterious and magical atmosphere.
In addition, the tree-shaped lava formations in Narusawa Village are famous for their large number of volcanic vents known as “spiracles,” making the area a rare and remarkable natural wonder in the world.

Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (formerly known as the Kachi Kachi Ropeway) connects Lake Kawaguchiko with Mt. Tenjo and is one of the area’s most popular attractions. From the gondola, visitors can enjoy beautiful views overlooking Lake Kawaguchiko below. At the summit park, breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Fuji and the lake can be seen right in front of you.
The observation deck was renovated in July 2017 and is now twice its original size, offering even more space to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding landscape. Popular attractions at the summit include the “Bell of Heaven,” the “Rabbit Shrine,” and the traditional local activity known as “Kawarake-nage,” where visitors throw small clay discs for good luck.
